Accessorial Services - Services performed by an agent or the van operator such as packing, unpacking, extra pickup, long carry, elevator use charge, storage or any other service related to the move, beyond the basic inventorying, loading, unloading and transportation of the goods. Accessorial services are charged in addition to line haul transportation charge. NOTE: not all tariffs have these charges; IE: the current 400 tariff does not charge for stairs, elevators, or excessive distance from the front door of the residence to the door of the van.

Actual Cash Value Coverage - Often called Depreciated Value Coverage, this option will increase the liability of the carrier to the actual value of the goods being moved. The age of the goods is taken into account in determining the value. There will be a minimum declaration required, based on the weight of the shipment, and you may declare higher than minimum amounts if you wish. Extraordinarily high declarations may require supporting documentation.

Actual Weight - The weight of a shipment determined by subtracting the Tare weight (the light weight of the van) from the Gross weight (the loaded weight of the van).

Additional Transportation Charge (ATC) - A charge to compensate the carrier when service is performed in an area where costs are higher than the cost used to establish the base rates. It compensates the carrier for labor rates or other additional costs such as added time due to traffic congestion while traveling to a location for pickup or for delivery.

Advanced Charges (Third Party Service) - Charges for services performed by other companies; not employees of the moving company. The mover, one of the agents or the carrier, as requested by the shipper, engages these companies. These charges are often paid by the mover and advanced to the bill of lading charges, or they may be paid directly by the shipper to the Third Party.

Agent - A company appointed by the carrier to act on their behalf. It could be a local moving company that contracts to perform services for the carrier. They perform such serves as estimating, packing, hauling, storage, unpacking. They are known by several names: the booking agent, the origin agent, the hauling agent and/or the destination agent. Also, each company operates under its own name. IE: "Cor-O-Van Moving and Storage, Inc., agent for North American Van Lines".

Appliance Dolly - Any of several wheeled tools used to make relocating items safer and easier. Professional movers will have all the tools needed for the move.

Appliance Service (Servicing Special Articles) - At the request of the shipper, consignee or owner of the goods the carrier will service (prepare for transportation and then prepare for operation) such articles and appliances at origin and destination. Such service will not include articles secured/attached to the premises, or plumbing, electrical or carpentry service necessary to disconnect, remove, connect and /or install an article or appliance. If the carrier does not possess the qualified personnel to properly provide this service the carrier may, upon request of the customer, arrange for a Third Party to provide this service. Expect to pay an extra fee for each item at each end of the move. Note: The carrier assumes NO LIABILITY for charges of a third party for resynchronization of grandfather clocks, including the pendulum or weights disassembled at origin by the carrier. Likewise, there is NO LIABILITY for retuning, refocusing or other adjustments of television sets or pianos unless such services were made necessary by carrier neglect.

Attempted Delivery to Residence from SIT - When, through no fault of the carrier, delivery to a residence from Storage-in-Transit is attempted but not made, a charge based on the round trip mileage from the warehouse to the residence will apply. Also any applicable waiting charges will be made. In addition if the goods are off loaded and placed back into Storage-in-Transit an additional first day storage charge will be added.

Auxiliary Service (Shuttle also known as Impracticable Operations) - If, due to circumstances beyond the control of the mover, the "Long Haul Equipment" or "Road Van" can not be positioned reasonably close to the pick up or delivery location and a second, smaller (Shuttle Vehicle) vehicle is needed to transport the property between the moving van and the pick up or delivery location, the goods are said to be "shuttled" in or out. This is usually caused by the physical conditions of the road or other traveling conditions. For example, if a road or driveway is too narrow, a bridge is unable to support the weight of the van, there are low-hanging branches or the van cannot be parked near the location, an auxiliary service is needed. Charges are additional and may be charged on an hourly basis or on the weight of the shipment. Often charges are added for extra labor as well. This can be a costly service.
